Photography is entirely about light. Every other aspect of it is a consequence of how the photographer uses his tools to etch light into a permanent visual form. When the photographer is in tune with his equipment, when he sees the light around him as an expression of emotion and time; when the shutter of the camera matches the rhythm of his heart, and the aperture becomes an extension of his iris, his images will be a true reflection of the light that surrounds us, and he will have become a Light Catching Machine.

Elan Sherman was formally trained to become a Light Catching Machine at the Pennsylvania State University, where he graduated with a B.A. in Photography. More than just training him to make fine prints, his time spent there with Marc Hessel and Ken Graves taught him to appreciate the many fine subtleties that are ever present in the process of photography. The simple fact that a true black and white print is made of pure silver, is enough to keep Elan hand printing his photographic images well into the 21st century (and beyond!). While he believes there is no technology that matches the unique quality of hand made black and white prints, there are certainly plenty of other reasons to use digital and color technologies, most importantly the ease with which they can be shared.

Elan photographs most of his professional and personal series on film, and later transfers them to digital. He always offers his clients their digital files on 300 year archival CD's or DVD's. Being a digital imaging consultant to other photographers and professional visual artists requires that Elan constantly learn, experiment, and use new techniques to further understand the subtleties of the modern photographic medium.

Please contact Elan directly at his email for an appointment to discuss your photographic needs. Elan is also available to answer any questions you may have about his photography, or photography in general.

"Observe, and be observed."
