EXTRA CREDIT assignments:

Choose one or more of these 4 page papers:

 

1. What is Graphic Design?  How did Andy Warhol affect perceptions of modern Graphic Design?  How did he blend graphic design and art?  How has graphic design changed in the last fifty years?

 

2. What is Coca Cola’s role in modern advertising and marketing technique?  Use historical evidence.  Choose one company today that follows the same or similar strategies that coca-cola used throughout the 20th century.  Why are these strategies still being used?  How did CC develop these strategies, did they borrow them from somewhere else?

 

3. Why is everyone else so happy?  -  Discuss marketing techniques and how they influence us?  Are marketing strategies successful?  Are you affected by marketing?  What would be different in a world without marketing?  What is the “dark side” of marketing?  Can marketing be used in a positive way?

4. On the internet, research the various properties of type. Write a one page (minimum)

paper discussing the type properties you have researched. Your paper should especially

discuss such properties as serif, sans-serif, fonts, leading, kerning, type size, etc. Discuss

how you would choose a font for a specific application. Select a professionally made logo of an existing business and discuss why they use a specific font. Does it work?

 

5. Create a logo for a business, group, or institution that you feel is not well represented by their current logo, or does not have a logo.  Contact the chosen entity and:

1.  Be up front – tell them you are in a Photoshop HS class and you are working on an extra credit assignment.

2.  Determine who is responsible for making the decision to replace/create the logo

3.  Develop printed material to exhibit your logo to the decision makers at the chosen entity.

4.  Make an appointment to meet with the decision maker and follow through with the meeting.

5.  During the meeting show your work to the decision maker and explain the process and themes in the logo.  If they do not accept the logo, attempt to get as much constructive criticism as possible, and/or take their ideas and develop a new logo.

6.  Keep a journal of the whole process – write the time you spent, your thoughts and feelings about the process.

Papers should be double spaced, no larger than 10 point font.
